2002 Population Growth 1.3%
Australia's population grew by 1.3% in 2002 according to figures released today by the ABS. Natural increase (births minus deaths) was only 300, or 0.002% so that growth was virtually entirely due to net migration of 139,000.
Queensland continues to grow fastest of all states at 2.4% highlighting the intersate migration effect, similar to that for the nation from external migration. Tasmania recorded a gain from interstate migration for the first time since September 1991.
