Stockmarket Positive in July

The month of July saw the Australian All Ordinaries Price index rise 3.6% to give four out of the last five months as positive for the total Australian sharemarket. At this month end the 1 Year rolling return is positive at 2.4%, the first positive 1-year return on the price index since May 2002. It has been a rocky couple of years in sharemarkets with September 11, HIH, One Tel, SARS and War.

The Australian Share Ownership Survey released by the ASX earlier this year, shows that 18% of Australians directly own shares and 50% own shares either directly or through managed funds. The 18% direct ownership is down from 22% at the time of the last survey in 2000. The older age groups show higher percentages owning shares with 46% in the 55+ age group compared to 29% in the 25 to 39 age group.
